ATTENTION TOWN RESIDENTS

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued a Drought Advisory Update on February 9th that expanded the Statewide Drought Warning to 39 counties including Shenandoah County.

The Drought Warning designation calls for an increased public awareness and a reduction in water withdrawals of 10% through voluntary water conservation.
Required actions include notifying the public of the Drought Warning, and requesting the voluntary reduction in the following nonessential water uses:
Note: Many of these are not issues at this time of year and are included for information purposes only.
A. Water to wash down streets, sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking lots, service station aprons, tennis courts, other hard surfaced areas, buildings, and structures, except as required for safety concerns.
B. Water to wash automobiles, trucks, trailers, and any types of mobile equipment, except where required to meet air quality standards. If you must wash your vehicle; always use the Commercial Car Wash.
C. Watering of shrubbery, trees, lawns, grass, plants and other vegetation.
D. Water from fire hydrants for construction purposes or any purpose other than fire suppression or public emergency.
E. Water to fill or refill swimming pools.
F. Customers not to be served drinking water in restaurants unless requested.
G. Refrain from outdoor use of water for irrigation.
H. The Drought Warning stage implements higher water rates for excess use. Normal water rates apply for consumption up to 10,000 gallons per billing cycle. Rates are increased by 15% for consumption above 10,000 gallons per billing cycle.

OBVIOUSLY MOST OF THE SUGGESTED WAYS TO CUT BACK WATER USAGE LISTED ABOVE AREN’T GOING TO HELP MUCH DURING THE WINTER, PLEASE JUST USE COMMON SENSE WHERE YOU CAN TO CONSERVE.

Thank you, Mayor Dan Harshman
